Preach The Word. November This sermon was delivered at The Iron Hall Assembly in Belfast, Northern Ireland, by Pastor David Legge. It was transcribed from the recording titled "The Practice and Principles of The Lord's Supper - Part 1" - Transcribed by Preach The Word. All material by David Legge is copyrighted.   The book begins with defining what the Lord's Supper is, which Baptists agree it is an ordinance of the church although Presbyterians use the word sacrament, which means, according to the Westminster Larger Confession, "a holy ordinance instituted by Christ in his church, to signify, seal and exhibit unto those that are within the covenant of.

The Lord's Supper began, "we believe, as a fellowship meal -- the Love Feast" (William Barclay, The Lord's Supper, p. 57). The Didache (The Teaching of the Lord by the Twelve Apostles to the Gentiles, which was written sometime between A.D.) also indicates (in chapters 9 & 14) that the Lord's Supper and the Agape meal were celebrated.

The Passover meal looked forward to the Messiah who had yet to come in history. The Lord’s Supper looks back to the Messiah who has already come in history. We live not in the era of promise but in the era of fulfillment. We are the people of God upon whom “the end of the ages has come” (1 Cor. ).   The Body of Christ today and our corresponding program is based on Faith; we DO NOT participate in the Lords Supper (Israel's Program) and neither did our apostle PAUL whom actually reproved and corrected the Corinthians NOT to come together for this reason but to come together for 'edification' which we will closely examine in this study.
