The interaction between the forces of heredity and environment determines the personality brought up of individuals. Heredity is constant which at the time of conception is decided once for all in the life of human beings whereas environment remains to be flexible and is susceptible to changes throughout life. The formation of the aspiration level in turn depends on the environment in which agents are moving, as this shapes the reference frame on which agents draw. Aspiration level theories assume that an agent has an aspiration level, which is either a value on a goal variable (e.g., profit or market share) or, in the case of multiple goals, a vector of goal values that is satisfactory to the agent.
Research on performance aspirations has tended to assume that historical and social aspirations work in parallel and influence strategic behavior in a similar manner.
We posit that these two distinct modes of performance comparison in fact lead to firm behavior. We also explore how in prior acquisition performance influences the relationship between aspiration levels and subsequent strategic.
